Injury isn’t the only threat on the job. Illnesses, from heat stress to exposure-related sickness, can be just as dangerous. That’s why illness prevention is a core focus of our Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) and everyday safety program.
Common Illness Risks in Our Work
• Heat exhaustion and heat stroke from prolonged sun exposure
• Respiratory issues from paint fumes, dust, or silica exposure
• Dehydration due to inadequate fluid intake
• Fatigue-related illness from overexertion
• Communicable illnesses like colds, flu, or COVID-19
What We Do to Prevent Illness
1. Heat Illness Prevention Protocol
– Water, shade, and breaks are required, especially in temps over 80°
– Cool-down rest breaks are mandatory every 2 hours when it’s 95°
– Supervisors monitor the team and weather conditions in real-time
– Crews are trained to recognize early signs of heat exhaustion and stroke
2. Respiratory Protection
– Ventilation is provided when working with strong chemicals or inside enclosed spaces
– Respirators or dust masks are issued when needed, per Cal/OSHA regs
