PREVENTING THE TOP 4 CONSTRUCTION HAZARDS: FALLS, STRIKES, ELECTROCUTIONS & CAUGHT-INS

CONSTRUCTION HAZARDS

In construction, safety isn’t just policy, it’s personal. Workers face serious risks every day, and for too many, those risks lead to life-altering injuries or fatalities. According to OSHA, the four most common causes of death in construction: falls, struck-by incidents, electrocutions, and caught- in/between injuries, account for nearly 60% of all jobsite fatalities.

At HiTech Painting, Inc., we refuse to accept these dangers as “just part of the job.” We’ve built our entire safety culture around preventing the “Fatal Four” before they happen.

Understanding the Importance of Wood Treatment

1. Falls

Falls are the leading cause of death in construction. Whether it’s a roofer without a harness or a painter on an unstable ladder, the risk is everywhere. One misstep can result in broken bones, brain injuries, or worse.

2. Struck-By Accidents

Struck-by incidents often involve moving equipment, flying debris, or dropped tools. These injuries can happen in an instant, especially in tight jobsite spaces with multiple trades working side by side.

3. Electrocution

Power lines, exposed wires, and improper grounding are common jobsite threats. Even a momentary lapse in electrical safety can be fatal. Painters working near lighting systems or outlets are often at unexpected risk.

4. Caught-In/Between Hazards

This includes being pinned between heavy equipment and walls, or trapped by collapsing structures. These injuries are often gruesome and require intensive rescue efforts.

Safer Project Site

How HiTech Prevents Accidents

1. Fall Protection Planning

We treat every elevated surface, no matter how temporary, as a potential fall zone.

  • Personal fall arrest systems are issued and inspected regularly
  • Guardrails and edge protection are installed before work begins at height
  • Anchor points are verified daily, not just at project startup
  • Ladder safety is part of onboarding and reinforced through weekly toolbox talks
  • Scaffolds are inspected and tagged before every shift

New hires and temp workers receive extra oversight and hands-on training during their first weeks, because falls often occur among the least experienced team members.

2. Equipment & Vehicle Awareness

  • Construction sites are dynamic, and moving equipment is a top hazard. Our crews stay alert and our supervisors enforce strict traffic control procedures:
  • Spotters are assigned in zones with obstructed visibility
  • Equipment routes are clearly marked with cones and signage
  • Drop zones are designated and restricted to authorized personnel only
  • High-visibility vests and hard hats are non-negotiable
  • Communication protocols are used when forklifts, boom lifts, or trucks are active nearby

We keep our painting teams out of danger by scheduling around other trades when possible and maintaining awareness of vehicle movement throughout the day.

3. Electrical Safety Protocols

Painters aren’t electricians, but we often work near energized systems. That’s why electrical safety is part of our standard procedures.

  • Circuits are shut down and locked out before we paint near panels or outlets
  • GFCI protection is used on all temporary power sources
  • Extension cords and lighting are regularly inspected for wear or overload
  • Overhead power lines are flagged and minimum clearance distances are enforced

We collaborate with site supervisors to verify all power-related hazards are addressed before we arrive on-site.

4. Jobsite Organization & Supervision

Most caught-in/between injuries happen in chaotic or poorly supervised environments. We make sure our sites stay clean, coordinated, and calm.

  • Access to trenches or confined spaces is restricted unless protection systems are in place
  • Staging areas are organized to prevent pinch points or collapsing materials
  • Daily walk-throughs are conducted by supervisors to review site layout and make adjustments
  •   Emergency exits and routes are always kept clear

Good housekeeping isn’t just about cleanliness, it’s about control. A well- organized site is a safer one.
